OH chief died exiting auto at nursing home shooting

46 year old Nurse Marlina Medrano, 48 year old nurse's aide Cindy Krantz, and 36 year old Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario, were killed in the Friday attack. Authorities say Steven Eric Disario, who headed the Kirkersville Police Depar. He said he saw people "running" from the Pine Kirk Care Center.

Investigators says they also found Hartless dead inside the nursing home.

Thomas Hartless was serially abusive to those closest to him, authorities say ― and on Friday, those unlucky enough to be close to him were his last victims.

Spokeswoman Jill Del Greco, of the OH attorney general's office, said investigators had more interviews planned and learning more about the connection between Hartless and Medrano is part of their efforts.

Some nursing home residents barricaded themselves during the shooting, but none of them was injured, he said.

Records show Medrano had obtained civil protection orders against Hartless. In that case, Hartless was charged with kidnapping, abduction, aggravated menacing and domestic violence.

"I am afraid to be alone with him, that he will hurt me for good", Medrano wrote in her latest petition in May. She also told police Hartless "doesn't like police". It's suspected Hartless took his own life.

The Columbus Dispatch profiled Hartless, painting a picture of a man who was violent with any woman he came into contact with. No nursing home residents were injured.

A report via WHIO told of the slain police chief expecting his seventh child with his wife and had only been chief about three weeks when the deadly shooting occurred.

Investigators say the gunman briefly held two passers-by hostage before the police chief arrived.

"It is a secure facility", Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said of Pine Kirk during a press conference Friday afternoon.

Disario, responding to a report of a man with a gun, apparently encountered the gunman in that area.

Gov. John Kasich ordered flags flown at half-staff in Licking County and the Statehouse and expressed his condolences in a tweet.
