Russian Federation 'brazenly' meddled in United States election, says ex Central Intelligence Agency boss

"So we knew at the time that the Russians were involved in this effort to try to interfere in our election, so with that backdrop, and increasing indications that they were involved with that, seeing these types of contacts and interactions during the same period of time raised my concern", he said.

Brennan said during Tuesday's open hearing he did not know whether Trump's campaign "colluded" with Russian Federation but said he saw "information and intelligence that was worthy of investigation".

Former CIA Director John Brennan says he personally warned Russian Federation last summer against interfering in the USA presidential election.

The Senate panel on Tuesday made a decision to issue two additional subpoenas to Flynn's businesses and sent the letter to his lawyer asking about the legal basis for his invoking his Fifth Amendment right over documents as opposed to testimony.

Brennan's testimony was the first public confirmation of the worry at high levels of the US government a year ago over suspicious contacts between Trump campaign associates and Moscow.

Making matters just a little worse, Brennan answered questions about Trump apparently leaking classified secrets to Russian Federation for unknown reasons, which the former CIA director said likely violated two US intelligence protocols.

Brennan balked at addressing the notion of evidence, saying his role was in intelligence gathering, not determining what could be used as evidence in a criminal matter.

"I don't feel it's appropriate to characterize discussions and conversations with the president", said Coats.

Brennan said he later briefed congressional leaders about the intelligence agencies' finding on Russian interference in August and September.

Responding to former CIA Director John Brennan's testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, someone in the shadowy bowels of Trump central dusted off the Underwood and pounded out a response so disconnected from Brennan's words, or our Earth, that it's nearly zen.

"I was anxious by a number of the contacts that the Russians had with USA persons", he said.

He said he had personally told a senior Russian security official that continued meddling would backfire and prevent any warming of relations after the election. He said he became aware of Russia's activities last summer. The panel, along a number of other congressional committees, the FBI, and a newly appointed special counsel, are conducting investigations into Russian meddling that include any potential links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. He described the FBI investigation into the matter as "well-founded".

"They've been involved in elections for many years including trying to influence the ones here in the United States with propaganda or whatever, but this cyber environment now provides new opportunities to collect, to collect and release, to influence, and they are increasingly adept at it", he said.

Brennan said he was one of the first USA officials to warn Moscow about its activities and to cease efforts to affect the election's outcome.

In recent weeks, Democrats like Quigley have seized on Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and a parade of stories about Russian Federation by trying to ramp up political pressures on the president and Republicans.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"As I said Mr. Gowdy, I don't do evidence", Brennan said.

Former CIA Director John Brennan testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, May 23, 2017, before the House Intelligence Committee Russia Investigation Task Force.

A day earlier, Flynn had invoked his constitutional right not to incriminate himself in response to the Senate committee's request for details about interactions between him and the Russians.

On Monday, while visiting Israel, Trump told reporters, "I never mentioned the word or the name Israel".
