Alt-Right rally cancelled in Portland, moves to Seattle instead

Since President Donald Trump's election in November, the city has been beset by violence at political rallies from groups on the left and the right.

No, I didn't know the federal government issued rally permits either.

Wheeler said the city is in mourning from a deadly stabbing on a light-rail train and that the events would exacerbate tensions.

Court documents allege a man charged with fatally stabbing two men and injuring a third who tried to shield young women from an anti-Muslim tirade in Portland, Oregon, bragged about the attacks as he sat in the back of a police patrol auto. The attacks occurred hours before the start of Ramadan, a month-long Muslim holy period of fasting, prayer and charity.

The mayor of Portland, Oregon, is calling on federal authorities to cancel a pair of upcoming rallies organized by conservative groups, saying the city was still "in shock" after two men were fatally stabbed on a commuter train Friday while fending off a man shouting anti-Muslim slurs. The first titled the "Trump Free Speech" Rally, and the second is a "March Against Sharia". "I urge them to ask their supporters to stay away from Portland".

The suspect in Friday's stabbing, Jeremy Joseph Christian, "attended a similar far-right rally on April 29 called a "March for Free Speech" in East Portland", member station OPB reports. His Facebook page says the effort is "about fighting corruption and big government with the strength and power of love".

"We are so much better in the community for having people like them in it", he said.

"This has been a very, very trying time for everybody in the city of Portland", he said. We did everything we could to kick him out.

"I want future generations to remember what happened here and why it happened and what they were willing to give to do the right thing", Wheeler said.

This is America, get out if you don't like free speech. At one point, Christian blurts a racial epithet, according to the video from reporter Doug Brown of The Portland Mercury weekly newspaper show. One of the passengers was wearing a hijab. He is accused of aggravated murder, intimidation - the state equivalent of a hate crime - and being a felon in possession of a weapon and is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.

The men were identified by police as 23-year-old Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and 53-year-old Ricky John Best.

Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, was also stabbed but survived.

Earlier, in an interview with CNN, Wheeler called the three men heroes. "We need action and we need leadership", Wheeler said.

When asked if banning the speech was constitutional, the Mayor's spokesperson said it was "right" and the concern for potential violence took precedence...which doesn't really answer the question. "I'm a libertarian. I'm not right wing, I'm for gay marriage, I'm against the drug wars".

The so-called "alt-right", is a far-right movement that has been linked to white nationalism, racism, misogyny and anti-Semitism. A scheduled, properly permitted rally, or the riot that will result if these events are cancelled?

Mat dos Santos, the legal director of the ACLU of OR, says Wheeler's call to block the rallies is well-intentioned but incorrect.

The June 10 protest is called #MarchAgainstSharia, KATU reported.

The ACLU of OR responded to Wheeler's request, and said "government censorship is not the answer".

"We are all free to reject and protest ideas we don't agree with".
