What happened in Bill Cosby's sexual-assault trial

He is facing three counts of aggravated indecent assault, which each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

Constand, 44, of the Toronto area, is expected to take the stand this week and tell her story in public for the first time.

Prosecutors said the case is about trust, betrayal and an inability to consent, reports CBS Philly. That's what this case is about.

In previous court documents, Cosby has admitted to giving quaaludes to young women, but said the encounter with Constand was consensual.

It seemed that all but maybe one of these accusations had passed the statute of limitations and could not be prosecuted. Constand's lawyer has disputed that since Constand was dating a woman at the time.

Cosby, 79, once a beloved entertainer known for his family-friendly brand of comedy, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in 2004.

"Like Andrea, at a certain point in their friendship, he invited her over for lunch to discuss her career plans". Evin Cosby, one of his four daughters, wrote an essay defending her dad.

The 2005 civil case, for which Cosby and Constand reached an undisclosed settlement, is the source of much of the evidence being used against Bill Cosby.

She says she later woke up, hours later, perhaps the next morning, on a bed with Cosby, where he was forcing her to do a sex act.

Defence lawyer Brian McMonagle immediately attacked what he said were inconsistencies in Ms Constand's story.

"What do you see?"

Ex-Playboy model Victoria Valentino, Florida nurse Therese Serignese and former actor Lili Bernard, all among Cosby's accusers, were spotted in the courtroom's overflow room. And, he says Cosby gave her the pills only after she complained of having trouble sleeping.

Prosecutors had sought to include testimony from 13 other accusers, but District Judge Steven O'Neill ruled that would be too prejudicial.

A tearful Johnson, who worked at the time for Cosby's agent, said she initially hid the pill under her tongue but that Cosby checked to see if she had swallowed it.

Cosby's lawyers questioned her credibility. Dozens came forward to say he had drugged and assaulted them. "They spoke, at times, for 30 or 40 minutes at a pop".

She had also been alone with him prior to the alleged assault, the attorney said, during a visit to his Foxwoods Resort Casino hotel room in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Then the two had dinner, sipped "cognac and brandy in front of a fire, romantically", according to McMonagle. But she says she really resisted, tried not to take the pill, tried to put it under her tongue, only to have him look at her tongue and insist on her swallowing it. She wasn't incapacitated, we were together, it was romantic. They said that there is a deposition that exists, I believe in a worker's compensation lawsuit she filed, in which she says that she went to the hotel with Cosby in 1990, so six years apart on that.

Cosby appeared to be listening intently during the opening statements.

"Regardless of the trial's outcome, the goal of Cosby's crisis managers is to ensure his legacy is at least partially preserved", he says.

"There are not a lot of facts here in dispute". "She called him continuously".

She began experiencing blurred vision and difficulty speaking, and was "in and out", she told police. There is no dispute that he inserted his fingers into her vagina. She told police she did not consent to the touching. Through the latter he turned the lives of an upper middle-class African-American family into a groundbreaking TV sitcom. He created TV characters, most notably Dr Cliff Huxtable, with crossover appeal among blacks and whites alike. In later years, Cosby became a public moralizer, speaking out against what he saw as the failings of African-American community in raising children.

Jurors will also hear testimony from another woman, Kelly Johnson, one of dozens of women who've accused Cosby of sexual assault in recent years.

Two of the jurors are black, a man and women both in their 30s.
