The congressman-doctor who treated Scalise on the ball field

He later died from his injuries, President Donald Trump said. Two officers were wounded, and lawmakers and the president said the outcome would have been worse if they were not there.

Trump also broke the news that the shooter, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of IL, had died.

Congressmen on the scene also said that multiple rounds had been fired and that the shooting "seemed to go on forever".

On Capitol Hill, members of Congress are stunned.

Davis said the congressional game was a great demonstration that Democrats and Republicans could still get along.

The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo", said Sen.

Witnesses reported that James Hodgkinson, identified by authorities as the man who carried out the attack on congressmen as they practiced for an upcoming charity baseball game, was firing a rifle when the attack began. At the same time I hear Steve Scalise over at second base scream - he was shot. This has got to be the message of Republicans like me and Democrats alike.

"I want to commend Special Agents Crystal Griner, David Bailey and Henry Cabrera for their heroic and appropriate response in protecting the Members and others", said Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa. And having no self-defense, the field was basically a killing field. "He was just walking and shooting", she said of the man, whom she described as white and wearing a T-shirt and shorts.

Asked whether he thought it was a random shooting, Republican lawmaker Mo Brooks, who was preparing to bat at the time, told CNN: "It sure as heck wasn't an accident".

Political and religious leaders offered prayers for Rep. Steve Scalise and four others who were injured in a shooting during a GOP congressional baseball practice.

"We reported to police that there was a gentleman that confronted us when we were going to our auto and he wanted to know whether it was Republicans or Democrats that were out there".

"It's unfortaunte, it's deplorable, but I can't say I'm surprised", Congressman for Virginia's 9th Congressional District, Morgan Griffith, said.

When congressional members were told in a bipartisan briefing that Thursday's baseball game would still be held despite the shooting, they leapt to their feet in a standing ovation, Republican Representative Martha McSally told Reuters.

Scalise, the third-ranking GOP whip in the House, was shot in the hip and listed in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. According to his office, he spoke to his wife by phone before going into surgery.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy", Trump said in a statement, adding that he was closely monitoring the developments in Alexandria, Virginia just outside the United States capital, where police have arrested the unidentified gunman.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted "our thoughts and prayers are with all affected", shortly after learning about the shooting.

Brooks later said he ran to the first-base side and hid behind a batting cage as gunfire erupted, and he saw Scalise crawling out of the outfield leaving a trail of blood.

Scalise is the No. 3 House Republican leader.
