State Senator's daughter safe after Navy ship collision

Fitzgerald's commander, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was evacuated by a Japanese naval helicopter while United States military copters evacuated two injured U.S. sailors. "NYK has established a crisis management headquarters, and fully cooperated with an investigation by the Japan Coast Guard together with the shipowner".

He and a couple of other crew members have since been released from hospital.

The damage to the Fitzgerald resulted in some flooding, the Navy said.

The damage could have sunk the Fitzgerald, he said, but for the quick action of the crew.

When its crew is at full strength, the Fitzgerald usually has more than 250 personnel aboard and can reach speeds in excess of 30 knots.

A total of seven sailors had been missing since Saturday's crash off Japan's coast.

"Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families", President Donald Trump said on Twitter.

The Navy said that the incident was under investigation. In all, two berthing compartments and one machinery space, which houses one of the gas turbines for making the ship's electrical power, quickly filled with seawater.

The container ship was seen making a U-turn before the collision on some ship trackers, a move that has raised questions about what happened.

This was due to the Navy wanting to identify the bodies and let the next of kin know of the deaths before making a formal announcement, it said.

At least three others were injured in the collision which took place near the port city of Yokosuka.

The Navy won't name the men until their families have been notified, Aucoin said - although a TV news outlet in Charlottesville, Va., identified one of the missing seamen as local man Dakota Rigsby.

The commander of the US Navy's 7th Fleet, Vice-Admiral Joseph Aucoin, said that: "We have found the bodies of a number of our missing shipmates, and our honest sympathies go out to the families of those crew members" However, Aucoin did not authenticate the exact number of bodies that had been found inside the vessel.

Japanese officials said a Filipino cargo ship, the ACX Crystal, which had been chartered by a Japanese company, plowed into the starboard side of the Fitzgerald in a busy shipping channel. 'We thank our Japanese partners for their assistance'. "But I told him, "There's a reason you're still here, and make that count".

"Short of battle at sea, navy warships are not supposed to hit anything - not the ground, not each other, and certainly not container ships in the middle of the night", said John Kirby to The Guardian. The ships collided early Saturday morning, when the Navy said most of the 300 sailors on board would have been sleeping.

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's coast guard is investigating why it took almost an hour for a deadly collision between a U.S. Navy destroyer and a container ship to be reported.

"You have to realise a lot of them are 18, 19 and 20-year-olds living with guilt". The 10,000-ton Fitzgerald is a guided-missile destroyer that is dwarfed by the 29,000-ton ACX Crystal, a Phillippine based container ship.

The Fitzgerald was returning to a USA naval base in Japan after completing a training exercise with US and Japanese warships. Aerial television news footage showed its bow on the left side was dented and scraped, but it did not appear to have suffered any major structural damage.

The navy's acting secretary Sean Stackley said "we are all deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our fellow shipmates".
