Trump Appears to Confirm He Is Under Investigation, Attacks DOJ

US President Donald Trump has lashed out on Twitter over reports he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice, saying he is the victim of a "witch hunt".

It's a shift in the FBI investigation, which previously focused on Russian hacking during the election, possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, and possible financial crimes by Trump associates.

Trump has said he is "100 per cent" willing to testify under oath on Comey meetings and tell the FBI Special Consul Robert Muller that he never asked FBI to stop investigating.

Trump later told NBC's Lester Holt he had planned to fire Comey regardless of what recommendation he received from Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

Rosenstein pledged this week that he would maintain the integrity of the investigation and saw no reason to fire Mueller, despite reports that Trump was considering such a move. The Post spoke with five people briefed on the inquiries, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the probe publicly.

Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said earlier this week that, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal".

On Monday night, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers met with the Senate Intelligence Committee about those matters; Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats was doing the same around the time of the President's afternoon tweets.

The New York Times also reported that Mueller was seeking interviews with the three officials.

Before Trump took to Twitter on Friday, Rosenstein on Thursday issued a perplexing statement of his own, denouncing news stories based on anonymous sources. Rosenstein in a memo to Trump raised concerns over Comey, and later appointed Mueller as special counsel. According to Trump's tweet on Thursday, the investigation by Mueller came up with a story about collusion with #Russia, found no evidence.

Trump's tweets prompted Sen.

"Crooked H destroyed phones w/ hammer, "bleached" emails, & had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared- & they talk about obstruction?" the president said in a follow up tweet.

U.S. media had reported that Trump is personally being probed.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point.

When Rosenstein appeared before the House Appropriations Committee this week, he stated that Comey's firing could very well become a factor for Mueller's investigation.
