Trump lawyer: President not under investigation in Russia probe

The Post reported last week that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who was appointed to oversee the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election, is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

During his appearance on Fox News Sunday, things got pretty heated between Sekulow and host Chris Wallace as Wallace pushed back on the attorney's convoluted explanations about why Trump is not being investigated.

Trump had tweeted: "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

The attorney on "Meet The Press" Sunday also acknowledged that the president was aware that firing James Comey as FBI director could extend the entire time frame of the investigation into Russian Federation. "We're a nation of laws that apply equally to everyone, a lesson the president would be wise to learn", she said. Rubio says it's important for the American people to know how the Russians interfered because we have more elections coming up.

Sekulow stressed repeatedly that Trump is not under investigation.

Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

Washington D.C. [USA], June 17: Some critics of U.S. President Donald Trump have expressed fear that Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein could be fired after the former's tirade apparently against the latter on Twitter, according to the Washington Post.

As evidence, Sekulow said that Trump has not been notified of any investigation.

Representative Adam Schiff, Democrat of California, accused Trump and his allies of seeking to undermine Mueller's inquiry, setting a pretext for potentially firing those leading it. Trump has reportedly told friends that he considered firing Mueller, and the president's tweet Friday appeared aimed at Rosenstein, raising questions about whether he might fire him, too.

"He's not being investigated", Sekulow exclaimed, adding that he wanted to be "crystal clear" that they are "not aware of any investigation". But is he right that Trump would be removed from office if he fires Mueller? The conversations Comey testified about happened before Mueller was even brought on as special counsel. "And the president has a very effective utilization of social media".

"He takes the action that [the Attorney General's office] recommended and now he's being investigated by the Department of Justice", he said. Now, however, his obsessive attacks take on legal meaning - perhaps instances of obstruction of justice in and of themselves, or, at the very least, powerful evidence that Trump would have tried just about anything to throw the Federal Bureau of Investigation off the trail. Yet while speaker of the House in 1998 Gingrich voted to impeach President Bill Clinton on charges of obstruction of justice and perjury.
