Murder charge for Virginia man in attack on Muslim girl

Fairfax County police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres and charged him with murder.

Police reports say Hassanen was with a group of friends walking and riding bikes toward the ADAMS community center, who scattered when Torres attacked, but witnesses suggested that Hassanen, who did not usually wear traditional Muslim clothing might have tripped on her abaya, a long, loose garment usually work over other clothes.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, was taken into custody as a suspect in the case and subsequently charged with murder, Wright said.

Hassanen and a group of other teens had gotten out of early morning mosque services and were just leaving breakfast at a nearby IHOP when a motorist approached them aggressively, causing majority to run back toward the mosque, The Washington Post reported.

"Immediately thereafter, the ADAMS' personnel notified both Loudon County and Fairfax County authorities who immediately began an extensive search to locate the missing girl", the statement said.

According to the Washington Post, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society often has late-night prayers during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

But Nabra's father has rejected the police theory and said his daughter was attacked because she was Muslim.

Parker said there was no indication the attack was motivated by race or religion and that there was no sign that Martinez used racial slurs during the incident. A baseball bat was also recovered from the area.

During the search, an officer saw a auto driving suspiciously in the area, pulled the driver over and then took him into custody.

Police in the USA state of Virginia have found the remains believed to be of a 17-year-old Muslim girl who was assaulted near a mosque before disappearing.

Arsalan Iftikhar, a human rights lawyer and author, told the Washington Post that he and his wife were at the mosque at about the same time as Nabra and that her death has struck fear into the local Islamic community.

"I lost my daughter, my first reason for happiness", Gazzar said on the phone in Arabic to her brother and sister in her native Egypt.

A Muslim girl died Sunday in Virginia after what appears to be a road rage incident, police investigators said Monday. Why would you kill a kid?

It appears the suspect, Darwin A Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling, got out of his vehicle and assaulted the victim. He's being detained in Fairfax County jail, officials said.

"I can't think of a worse instance to occur than the loss of a 17-year-old on Father's Day, as the father of a 17-year-old myself", Loudoun County Sheriff Michael Chapman told reporters.

"Community members" saw the teenagers "and directed them to ADAMS Center", the faith organization said in their statement.

"My daughter is dead, and I don't want anyone to feel what I feel, to lose your 17-year-old daughter".
