Ram Nath Kovind is BJP's prez candidate

BJP leader and former MP from Uttarakhand Tarun Vijay, who fought for the temple rights of Dalits in the state, on Tuesday met NDA's presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind. There are other big Dalit leaders in the country.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar showered praise on Governor Ram Nath Kovind, whom the ruling NDA earlier in the day named as its candidate for the July 17 presidential election, saying he is "personally glad" over his candidature. He drove down to Shah's residence where he was greeted by senior BJP leaders. The Dalit leader from Kanpur was elected twice to the Rajya Sabha: 1994-2000 and 2000-2006.

Kovind, now serving as Bihar Governor, has said that he will meet leaders of major political parties and seek their support to emerge as a "consensus candidate" for the coveted post.

Yechury said, "Kovind ji was the chief of RSS's Dalit branch".

"There is no better candidate than him".

Telangana Chief Minister and TRS Chief Rao also extended his support to NDA's presidential candidate after speaking to Prime Minister Modi. So, there is no question of mutual consent.

Kovind comes to the highest office after earning praise from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a political rival to the BJP, for his work as a governor.

The BSP's stand can not be negative towards a Dalit nominee for the post of president.

If Narayanan entered politics from the top-a noted diplomat he was asked by Indira Gandhi to join the Congress and contested his first Lok Sabha election at the age of 64 in 1984- Kovind has risen through the BJP's ranks and held various organisational posts. "The opposition will meet on June 22 - only then we can announce our decision", she said. When we asked on whom they want to build consensus, they had no answer then. "We didn't expect this from them".

"It was their (BJP's) proposal that they will get back to the opposition after zeroing on a candidate".

President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to also discharge the function of Governor of Bihar until further notice.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the notification in this regard and the process of the nomination has started that will continue till June 28.
