United Nations chief urges Israelis, Palestinians to resume negotiations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that the Palestinians, who view prisoners as national heroes, stop paying stipends to them and their families, and USA lawmakers have warned that Palestinian funding could be cut off unless Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halts the practice.

"Ending the occupation that began in 1967 and achieving a negotiated two-state outcome is the only way to lay the foundations for enduring peace that meets Israeli security needs and Palestinian aspirations for statehood and sovereignty", Xinhua quoted Guterres statement released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the start of the Arab-Israeli Six Day War. Adding 44 per cent of the territory allocated by the 1947 UN Partition Plan for a Palestinian state, to the 56 per cent set aside for a Jewish state, marked a new beginning for both Israel and stateless Palestinians.

The "occupation", claimed Guterres, "has fuelled recurring cycles of violence and retribution".

Fifty years into the perversion that the occupation is, we at APN are as determined as we've ever been to not let the extremists win, to bolster and embolden the constituency for peace - both among Israelis and among their brethren in the USA - and to help bring about a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the only solution that would ensure Israel's future as a state that is both Jewish and a democracy.

"Whether it's a child imprisoned by a military court or shot unjustifiably, or a house demolished for lack of an elusive permit, or checkpoints where only settlers are allowed to pass, few Palestinians have escaped serious rights abuses during this 50-year occupation..."

"Now is not the time to give up on this goal". He called for the establishment of a Palestinian state through "direct negotiations to resolve all final status issues on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, agreements and global law".

"The establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in east Jerusalem is the real guarantee for security and stability in the region", it said. Nineteen years earlier, in 1948, the state of Israel came into being in a violent process that entailed the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
