Oona Chaplin cast in Avatar sequels

Released in 2009, the first Avatar film remains the highest grossing film worldwide with over $2.7 billion in box office gross.

Speaking at 20th Century Fox's presentation at the ongoing annual CineEurope gathering in Barcelona, Lightstorm Entertainment Jon Landau provided an update on when exactly the Avatar sequels will head into production.

Of course, it all starts with a solid script.

Production for the upcoming Avatar sequels will officially begin this September.

The sequels have had a lot of scheduling setbacks over the last couple of years.

During the development phase, "some of the industry's best artists" have been working on designing a world of these movies, said Landau, who then showed a premiere preview montage of some of the designs of Pandora and its inhabitants. There's no more relatable theme than family. James Cameron previously revealed that, while each installment will tell its own story, they will all serve as one complete saga.

Game of Thrones' Oona Chaplin is the latest name linked to the franchise, The Wrap reported. She will also be part of the franchise for a while since Varang is supposedly part of the entire saga of the Avatar sequels.

Avatar 2 is set to open on Dec. 18, 2020; Avatar 3 on Dec. 17, 2021; Avatar 4 on Dec. 20, 2024; and Avatar 5 on Dec. 19, 2025.
