Preet Bharara Slams Bernie Sanders's Response to 'Pathetic' Attack on His Wife

The senator charged that attorney Brady Toensing, who chaired President Trump's campaign in Vermont, had "coincidentally, no doubt" requested an investigation five years later in January 2016 - right as Sanders was vying for the presidency. "I don't think it'll be a distraction", Sanders said between rallies organized against the Senate health-care bill last week.

"My wife is about the most honest person I know", an obviously irked Sanders, the Vermont independent, told Erin Burnett on CNN of his wife, Jane.

"All that I will tell you now, Erin, it is a sad state of affairs in America". Questions are also swirling about whether or not the Senator used his powerful position to influence the bank's decision to issue the loan, which is said to have been justified on paper with bogus information furnished by his wife. The complaint accused Jane Sanders, then-president of since-closed Burlington College, of distorting donor levels in the college's 2010 loan application.

According to allegations leveled last January by Brady Toensing - one of US president Donald Trump's top supporters in Vermont - Sanders' wife lied about the now-defunct college's financial support on an application for a $10 million bank loan for a 33-acre piece of property it purchased from the Roman Catholic church. In this one, Bernie is hit with a question he can't dodge, so he goes all-in on conspiracy theories about how Donald Trump tried to destroy his campaign.

Sanders had not given a statement prior to his CNN interview on Tuesday.

The wife of the nation's most prominent socialist legislator is the subject of a federal investigation regarding her role in the ultimate capitalist nightmare: A failed real estate deal. Here's the fact versus fiction assessment of crux of the matter:Claim: Jane Sanders left Burlington College "in better shape than it had ever been".

His interview came after reports that he and his wife had lawyered up as feds looked into allegations Jane Sanders fudged loan documents for a 33-acre expansion to Burlington College's campus while she served as the school president.

Burnett followed up again and asked Sanders whether he had any knowledge of the FBI investigating his wife. "But, it's fairly pathetic that when people are involved in public life, its not only they get attacked but their wives and their families get attacked".
