Rally to urge Heller to oppose current GOP health care bill

Senator McConnell, whose party has a razor-thin majority in the 100-member Senate, told reporters Republican leaders were still working to get the 50 votes needed to pass the bill.

The new proposal, which was crafted in secret by McConnell and GOP staffers, worries some conservative and moderate Republicans in the upper chamber - particularly because of the 22 million people it would strip insurance from over the next decade, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

Sources tell the Associated Press that Senate Republican leaders have abruptly delayed the vote on their health care bill until after the July 4th recess.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted Tuesday that the Republican effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare isn't dead, despite the Senate vote delaying.

McConnell first delivered the message to GOP senators at a private lunch attended by Vice President Mike Pence and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus.

The statement went on to say that the CBO's "history of inaccuracy, as demonstrated by its flawed report on coverage, premiums, and predicted deficit arising out of Obamacare, reminds us that its analysis must not be trusted blindly". Rural America was a stronghold for Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Even if Cornyn still opposes the delay, the decision is ultimately up to McConnell who is receiving the most pressure from Republicans who feel a vote on the bill that has been public for less than a week is too much, too fast.

For states like MI with Medicaid expansion, the Senate bill would reduce federal funding starting in 2021.

After meeting with Trump at the White House earlier Tuesday, Paul said in a tweet that the president is "open to making the bill better". Rand Paul of Kentucky and Dean Heller of Nevada keep opposing the Senate bill, then it is likely not going to pass.

"It's the biggest signature issue we have, and it's the biggest promise we've ever made in the modern era", House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a Fox News interview that aired on Tuesday.

Six people were arrested at Capito's Charleston office Monday after vowing to stay until she promised to vote against the Senate bill. While Trump did pick off an electoral vote in that state's Second Congressional District previous year, Democrat Hillary Clinton won the state overall.

The overlapping concerns and competing interests of the lawmakers highlight the balancing act facing Mr McConnell as he tries to unify his party and deliver a legislative win to the president.

"McConnell is going to relentlessly work all recess to cobble together 50 votes", Senator Chris Murphy of CT wrote on Twitter.

Congress' nonpartisan budget referee says the Senate Republican health care bill would leave 22 million additional people uninsured in 2026 compared to President Barack Obama's law.

Minutes after the report's release, three GOP senators threatened to oppose beginning debate.
