Rockets to acquire Chris Paul from Clippers

According to Wojnarowski, Paul agreed to opt into the final year of his $24.2-million contract in order for the Clippers to pull off the trade with Houston.

The Clippers will receive former Lakers reserve Lou Williams, small forward Sam Dekker and point guard Patrick Beverley as they slide into rebuilding mode while Houston attempts to field a star-laden squad to contend with the juggernaut Golden State Warriors. Also, the Rockets managed to pull off this deal without trading Clint Capela (one of their few blue chip trade pieces) or Eric Gordon (the now reigning Sixth Man of the Year).

Paul, 32, scored 18.1 points per game with 9.2 assists per game this season. His six seasons with Los Angeles came after he played six seasons with New Orleans.

The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement on a trade for LA Clippers All-Star point guard Chris Paul, sources told ESPN. A Paul-Harden union certainly won't make the Rockets title favorites over the Warriors, but it will give them a pair of superstars at a time when that seems to be the baseline for postseason success in the National Basketball Association.

Paul also is a nine-time All-NBA player and was named to the NBA's All-Defensive team nine times. The Clippers were considered a top suitor due to Anthony's no-trade clause, in part because of the close friendship between Anthony and Paul.

One concern is how Paul's midrange game fits in with Houston's philosophy of focusing on three-point attempts or layups while eschewing the midrange jumper.

Paul was set to become a free agent, and reportedly informed teams he would sign with the Rockets. He now joins NBA MVP runner-up James Harden in Houston's high-powered offense. The trade allowed the Rockets to make the money work to where they could access the mid-level exception in free agency by moving over the salary cap.

While it initially seemed as though the Houston Rockets would be adding All-Star point guard Chris Paul for almost nothing, the stakes have since been raised.
