AAP to support Meira Kumar

"AAP will support joint opposition's candidate Meira Kumar in (the) presidential election", senior party leader Ashutosh posted on Twitter.

The former state chief minister told Meira Kumar that her party had already declared its support for her candidature.

"We need to see the Presidential polls above political considerations".

Singh said the AAP was backing Meira Kumar as the opposition has a significant role to play in India's present circumstances.

"Hence, the opposition has made the presidential poll a fight for ideology to uphold the secular fabric of the country, so that the poor, oppressed and those from the weaker sections feel that their voice is reaching the highest constitutional post", she said.

He said the former Lok Sabha speaker's representatives telephoned Kejriwal and sought support for her candidature.

As decided earlier, the BJD and BJP lawmakers have to meet Ramnath separately though BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik was one of the first party presidents to lend support of his party to the NDA candidate.

Meanwhile, NDA President candidate Ramnath Kovind on his arrival today was given a rousing welcome by the ruling BJD and BJP leaders and party workers at the air port.

Asked about a formal announcement, a senior AAP leader said a decision would come soon.

The four-year-old party has 85 MLAs and four MPs, which translate into around 9,000 votes in the electoral college for the presidential election.
