Russia Threatens to Reciprocate US Seizure of Russian Diplomatic Compound

"If the U.S. partners do not understand differently, we will at some point have to act in this direction", Zakharova said at a weekly briefing, noting that a "long pause" on the issue has "dragged on".

CBS News said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters Moscow "will have to take reciprocal measures" if the issue regarding the compounds was not resolved.

The White House is considering the possibility of returning Russian diplomatic property in the United States to Russia to give a chance to cooperation between Moscow and Washington, Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to US President Donald Trump said Thursday.

Russia said yesterday that too many American spies operated in Moscow under diplomatic cover and said it might expel some of them to retaliate against the United States over Washington's expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats past year. Russian Federation is ready to shut them if the issue is not resolved, Ms. Zakharova said. "Washington has not only failed to cancel the decision on the expulsion of our diplomats, but it also refuses to issue visas to those who are scheduled to replace the expelled personnel".

The outgoing Obama administration expelled 35 suspected Russian spies late previous year and seized two diplomatic compounds over what it said was the hacking of USA political groups during the 2016 presidential election. "One of our options, apart from a tit-for-tat expulsion of Americans, would be to even out the numbers".

The Russian government has threatened to retaliate against the United States months after dozens of Russian officials were expelled from the U.S. and two of its properties were shuttered. Russian diplomats have said the compounds are treated as vacation homes, but USA officials claimed they were also used by Moscow for intelligence-related purposes.
