4 things to know about 2017 Emmy nominations

NBC's breakout hit "This Is Us", which comes from 20th Century Fox, scored a coveted nomination opposite cabler series "Better Call Saul" and "Westworld", and streaming shows "House of Cards", "Stranger Things", "The Crown", and "The Handmaid's Tale".

Shows including Atlanta, Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Veep are contending in the comedy category. Jeffrey Tambor, an absolute lock every year, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Transparent. Among these were some logical ones, such as David Harbour's nomination for Best Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and Millie Bobby Brown for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, but other nominations (or the lack thereof) were more questionable.

Though Fallon and his Tonight Show didn't win the Emmy for variety talk series last year, this year they didn't even get nominated.

In the Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series category, Cicely Tyson is nominated for How to Get Away with Murder and Laverne Cox is nominated for Orange is the New Black.

"Mr Robot" star Rami Malek also missed out on best actor in a drama series despite winning in that category a year ago.

"It's been a record-breaking year for television, continuing its explosive growth", said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington during the announcement. "I woke up to a GIF from my publicist, Erica, of a shirtless Anthony Rizzo from the Cubs and knew it was good news (because a shirtless Rizzo is always good news) but 13 is blowing my mind!"

Hulu won 18 nominations and Amazon 16 as online platforms landed 162 this year, a shift in visual storytelling creativity and consumption that will only speed up cable's seismic business challenges. He'll compete in the Guest Actor in a Drama Series category against Denis O'Hare, who plays Jesse on the NBC drama This Is Us. Also, Alec Baldwin, who won raves for his Donald Trump spoofs, is nominated in the best supporting actor category.

And finally, best comedy actress nominees include Pamela Adlon ("Better Things"), Jane Fonda ("Grace and Frankie"), Allison Janney ("Mom"), Ellie Kemper ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"), Tracee Ellis Ross ("Black-ish"), Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie") and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep").

Nominated for Best Limited Series are Big Little Lies, Fargo, Feud, Genius and The Night Of.

So how many Emmy nominations did "Game of Thrones" get? Stephen Colbert is set to host. Other notable nominations included Lead Actress in a Drama in which first-time nominee Claire Foy joins nominees Viola Davis, Elisabeth Moss, Keri Russell, Evan Rachel Wood and Robin Wright.
