Chelsea target Alvaro Morata wants to leave Real Madrid

"Sources said that De Gea would still like to move to Real Madrid at some stage during his career, but United are adamant they have no interest in selling", Rob Dawson wrote in his report for ESPN FC.

Manager Jose Mourinho also described it as "a shame" that the Spaniard would not be linking up with the squad.

In turn, Madrid president Florentino Perez is hopeful that the funds raised by Morata's sale will help the club in their pursuit of Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe, and so things could have a crucial knock-on effect, as per the report.

While United missed out on Morata, the club snapped up Lukaku and made the striker the second most expensive transfer in British football history, behind only Paul Pogba.

De Gea, meanwhile, was on the verge of making the opposite move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 before the transfer collapsed on deadline day after paperwork failed to arrive at La Liga headquarters in time. "We've signed an important player in attack and it's hard but you never know", Mata told Cadena Cope.

"Too bad he is not with us, but I wish him well".

Asked what he thought would happen with De Gea this summer, the former Madrid youth player said there would be no movement. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he stays'.

"The selling club is the one who puts the price on the player, the buying club doesn't". However, Milan seemingly believe that they can get the best out of him again at the San Siro next season, and so it remains to be seen whether or not an agreement can be reached with Bayern. "I don't think he can end with us", Mourinho added.
