Construction contracts awarded for HS2 in UK

Construction contracts awarded for HS2 in UK

Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake, who spoke during the meeting, said today: "The HS2 project must be completed in full and as soon as possible, and we will continue to call for full confirmation of the HS2 Eastern leg and for work to start on it early in order for the benefits to be felt by all areas in line with that commitment".

"This iconic rail infrastructure project will create significant opportunities for the United Kingdom construction industry and will drive growth in skills, jobs and prosperity".

David Higgins, Chairman of HS2 Ltd, said: "HS2 was always created to be much more than just a high speed railway and today we can see the opportunities it brings right around the country".

July 17 (Reuters) - A consortium that includes Carillion won a 1.4 billion pound ($1.8 billion) contract to help build Britain's High Speed 2 railway on Monday, offering respite as the builder grapples with the aftermath of a battering writedown.

The other companies included Skanska Construction UK, Costain and Balfour Beatty.

HS2 could carry more than 300,000 people a day.

"If we're going to free up the capacity of our mainline rail network, and that's what this is all about - it's about taking express trains off the existing railway line so we can run more commuter trains, more freight trains - then you're going to have to invest over the next decade and more to make sure that can happen".

The long-awaited HS2 rail project could "double the number of rush hour seats" for Leeds commuters, it has been revealed today.

The controversial HS2 high-speed railway will take another step forward on Monday with the awarding of major construction contracts and the confirmation of the route north of Birmingham through Yorkshire.

In February, Parliament granted powers to construct Phase 1 from London Euston to Birmingham, with the route opening in 2026.

Preparatory works are already underway, with main construction work starting in 2018/19 following a period of detailed design work.

As well as the civils work, invitations to tender have been issued for the line's main stations, at Euston, Old Oak Common and Birmingham.

"We are looking for partners to help us deliver stations which not only provide unparalleled levels of accessibility, ease and convenience for our passengers, but who will work with local communities to ensure we also help unlock wider regeneration, new jobs, homes and opportunities".

A bill will be published shortly covering phase 2a - from the West Midlands to Crewe and which is expected to open the following year - while phase 2b from Crewe on to Manchester begins in 2033.

"Manufacturers also want to see significant investment in commuter rail lines across the country as an opportunity to widen access to the talent pools they need for their business", said Chris Richards, head of Business Environment Policy at EEF.

The first phase of HS2, connecting London's Euston station with Birmingham in the midlands, is now scheduled for completion in 2026.
