Gareth Bale to Manchester United: Real Madrid star discusses Old Trafford links

The Welshman has netted 67 times in 150 appearances and has enjoyed a huge amount of success in terms of silverware in Madrid, with three Champions League titles to his name.

That was due to the reigning Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Men's Player award victor feeling he was being singled out for disproportionate treatment after Spanish prosecutors accused him of evading tax of 14.7million euros (£12.8m).

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a return to his former club but Morientes does not see a move happening.

"I read nothing about that, I have no clue what is going to happen", he said. "But I am happy at Madrid and there is no offer to buy me and so there is nothing to talk about", he explained.

The 28-year-old struggled with an ankle injury last season and only found a spot on the bench in Real Madrid's Champions League final win over Juventus last month. "Look, I only realised yesterday that [Romelu] Lukaku had joined Manchester United, so the truth is I don't know. But you would have to ask him".

With retirement very much now on the horizon, the former Sporting Lisbon man will, however, need to prioritise games from here on out, and despite this match being against a club he holds close to his heart the right decision is to watch on rather than take part.

"So I think he is saving the energy through the season".

"Logically I am a British player, so I am always linked with a return home". Maybe I should have had more time recovering, and not forcing things, but now there is no pain. "The ankle is strong and I am ready". "But now I want to have a good pre-season and to start 100 per cent fit, because when I came back last season I was only 50 per cent fit".
