Injured Vijay out, Dhawan comes in for Lanka Test series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has picked opener Shikhar Dhawan to replace injured Murali Vijay for the upcoming three-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka.

Left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been roped in the replacement in the squad. Dhawan last played a Test during India's home series against New Zealand in Kolkata in October 2016. India will play a three-match Test series starting July 21.

Chasing a competitive target of 191, Lewis smashed his way to an unbeaten 125 off 62 balls with as many as 12 sixes and six fours as the reigning World T20 champions knocked off the runs in only 18.3 overs. The BCCI medical team has subsequently advised Vijay to continue his rehabilitation program.

Was the selection committee not aware of Vijay's fitness or did the player try to rush his return is the question the Board needs to answer after it emerged on Monday that the opener hasn't fully recovered yet to take the flight to Sri Lanka. The Virat Kohli-led Team India departs for a full-fledged tour consisting three Tests, five ODIs and a one-off T20 global on July 19.

The southpaw made his comeback in the ODI series against England, but it was at the Champions Trophy that he made a splash with scores of 68,125,78 to finish the Golden Bat of the championship for the second consecutive time. This is the first time the two countries will be playing a full series (includes all three formats) in eight years. Star batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammad Shami were re-called for the Sri Lanka tour scheduled to be held from July 26 to September 6. He was out of action for nearly three-and-a-half months and had missed the entire IPL season with the Dharamsala Test against Australia in March being his last competitive match.
