Newgarden wins second Honda Indy Toronto

Rossi seemed more than pleased with his second-place finish in his Honda. "I love Hinch, he's a great representative, but this is so good".

Pagenaud was last season's IndyCar Series champion and is searching for his second victory of the season after winning in Phoenix in April.

Team Penske continued to demonstrate it's strong pace ahead of today's Honda Indy Toronto (3:00 p.m., CNBC), this time with Josef Newgarden leading the way in morning warm-up. "To me it creates a lot of action, a lot of racing, very good for the fans and tough for the drivers", he said.

"Thank you to the guys and thank you to Tim [Cindric] for making that call". "The days we get lucky and win a race, just take them". "It's going to be hard beating all of those guys, but I will tell you what, when you have got Chevy power, you have Chevy reliability and Chevy fuel mileage - you feel pretty good about things".

Pagenaud had a track-record lap of 58.9124 seconds at an average speed of 109.138 miles per hour on the 1.786-mile street course for his first pole of the season and 10th overall.

He also has enjoyed a long history of success at most of the tracks left on the calendar, including Toronto. "At least we finally kind of got the monkey off our back".

"I just need more time to get used to the auto", Gutierrez told the Star.

Although he's committed to his open wheel Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) team, the 30-year-old from Oakville would like to get his feet wet on a road course in NASCAR's second tier Xfinity Series sooner rather than later. "It's just too bad we got caught by the yellow cause I think we had the best auto today but congrats to Josef - it's good that we kept it in the family". "The auto really came alive on the blacks, so big thanks to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, all the guys - great stops - and all the fans in Toronto". Dixon still maintains the Verizon IndyCar Series lead with 423 points, but has just a three point edge on Team Penske's Helio Castroneves. Once Tony Kanaan nosed into the Turn 1 wall, it brought out the yellow after a handful of the Andretti contingent had been into the pits for their first scheduled stops.

Hinchcliffe was third for the second straight year, Marco Andretti was fourth, followed by Simon Pagenaud, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Max Chilton, Castroneves, Graham Rahal and Dixon.

The Honda Indy Toronto is a 151-mile race that is held at Exhibition Place. The day started out sunny and humid but clouded over during the event and it rained lightly at a few different times during the race.

"Track position was a big thing today", Newgarden said.

Esteban Gutierrez, who crashed late in qualifying Saturday, was cleared to race after experiencing concussion symptoms.
