A mobile client for the current version of RuneScape is on the way, and that's not all.

RuneScape, the massively popular MMORPG, is coming to mobile devices this winter.

The new app supports both Runescape and "Old School Runescape" (a version of the game that replicates the game as it existed back in 2007), so no matter what your tastes you can take your gaming experience with you wherever you go. Players can use their existing accounts and play in the same servers that they use in the PC versions of the games.

Players will be able to have a RuneScape and Old School RuneScape adventure just on their mobile devices if they choose, enabling past RuneScape players who have moved from PC to mobile as a preferred platform, to reconnect with the game and their characters once again.

Meanwhile, the modern RuneScape is also in development for mobile, following the Old School client. RuneScape is still primarily subscription-based, but much of the content is available to free-to-play users. Since first releasing in 2001, Jagex's browser-based MMORPG has quietly built a huge player base.

Both versions of RuneScape Mobile will boast all of the same features as their desktop counterparts, along with new controls optimized for mobile devices, as well as cross-platform play.

Old School RuneScape will launch this Winter while RuneScape will come after, although no date has been given. Accounts, characters, and progress will sync perfectly between the PC and mobile versions, with full interoperable play between the two platforms. Instead of the boom-and-bust cycle of new releases, it is possible to build up a steady audience of players that generate revenue over the years.

After being available in some form for more than 16 years, it's kind of fantastic that RuneScape hasn't had a mobile release yet.
