Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving has asked team to trade him

To have Rose without giving up any of their "Big Three" will be considered a great move for the Cavs.

Derrick Rose said his absence was a family issue and had nothing to do with basketball. With one last chance to regain his former glory, it's likely we'll see him find another gear this season, barring injury.

Come home, D. Rose, come home.

Because he has decent size, the Cavs could view him as an interchangeable backcourt starter with point guard Kyrie Irving or elect to bring him off the bench behind Irving and shooting guard J.R. Smith.

Either reaction has led to this: Rose languishing on a tighter-than-expected free-agent market for three weeks, no longer a priority.

Rose has been working out at the Lakers practice facility lately. "We just have to, you know, make sure that all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there".

That's when the possibilities seemed endless for Rose, one of the most physically explosive guards in league history. The oft-injured guard hasn't played more than 66 games since his MVP-winning season in 2010-11. Rose won the league MVP award in 2011 as a member of the Chicago Bulls. He even tore his ACL in his left knee in 2012 NBA Playoffs that needed surgery. Another torn right meniscus ended his 2014-15 season after 51 games.

Any deal sending Irving to NY would likely involve Carmelo Anthony, who wants to play on either the Cavaliers or the Rockets. Last season, he shot 22 percent. He averaged 18 points.

With the Cavs, Derrick Rose would be backing up Kyrie Irving rather than chasing him. Boston greatly improved their odds against the Cavaliers by signing All-Star Gordon Hayward, while Cleveland hasn't done much to improve their current roster or close the gap between themselves and the defending champion Warriors. With the Cavs only being able to offer a portion of the taxpayer mid-level exception or the veteran's minimum, the maximum amount the Cavs could pay Rose is $2.5 million over one year.
