Southampton Have Not Received Transfer Request From Liverpool Target Virgil van Dijk

According to new Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino, Van Dijk has said he wants to quit the club this summer, and as such has been excluded from the first-team squad. I was clear with the boy, and I was talking from the first day with him. The boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. Liverpool had to apologise for a public pursuit of the defender that involved an illegal approach, but Van Dijk has still been persistently linked with a move despite Liverpool going on record that all interest had ended in the player.

The Saints boss admits: "He is not involved with the team because psychologically he is not 100 per cent".

"I need to work with a player that works at 100 per cent to defend Southampton".

'My relationship with Virgil is excellent.

The Saints remain adamant they will not sell the Netherlands worldwide.

Southampton have made it clear their intention is to retain their captain whatever offers come in, but van Dijk remains determined to force his way out of the club.

We'll have to wait and see how things progress but I think the defender will eventually get his move and I wouldn't bet against van Dijk being a Liverpool player next season.

Pellegrino said: "The boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave".

The 26-year-old looked set for a £60m move to Liverpool [via the Mirror] earlier this summer but the proposed switch collapsed after the Saints complained to the FA regarding the Merseysiders conduct. Before the situation could develop any further, Liverpool performed a U-turn.

Southampton maintain van Dijk is not for sale, and Pellegrino has excluded the player from pre-season until he can demonstrate his commitment.

The Argentine added: "I hope that Virgil can review his feelings, because you know that today players are big business - not just the player but behind him there is a lot of interest".

"I don't want to say too much but we need the player, but 100 per cent".
