The Rangers are checking on Yu Darvish's trade value

The Texas Rangers have started reaching out to teams potentially interested in acquiring star pitcher Yu Darvish, gathering information on what sort of return they could receive if they decide to trade him before the July 31 deadline, major league sources told Yahoo Sports on Thursday. The Rangers have lost five in a row and sit five games below.500, 18 games out of first place in the West and 4 1/2 back in the wild card. FanGraphs puts their postseason odds at 11.2 percent.

This season Darvish is 6-8 with a 3.45 ERA in 20 starts with 131 strikeouts.

If fully on the market, Darvish would be the most talented starter available. But he has seen Darvish pitched with better tempo and a better idea of what hitters are trying to do against him. "But it is hard to say from an ownership/business level if it would get done".

They were already proactive in improving their starting rotation with the acquisition of Jose Quintana from the Chicago White Sox, and adding Darvish to the mix would give them another ace-caliber hurler.

Still, Texas has their own financial resources, so Darvish leaving isn't a given, and the Rangers won't be giving away the top starter on the market even if he's a rental.

Being a rare free-agent pitcher with All-Star pedigree, Darvish is set to cash in on a huge new deal this autumn. That said, they are the ones with the most need for starting rotation help of the teams that were mentioned and could be willing to give up the most for the upgrade.

The Rangers haven't been scoring runs for anyone of late, so the outlook would appear to be gloomy against the wild card-leading Tampa Bay Rays. If they slip further out of the race, the chances of Darvish being traded before the July 31 go up exponentially.
