Doctor delivers baby 12 hours before giving birth to her own

Although, the doctor was on his way, Hess chose to take it in her own hands as she knew the case needed urgent attention.

The obstetrician-gynecologist was preparing to give birth at a hospital in Kentucky but ended up delivering another patient's baby before her own.

Leah Johnson, one of her former patients, was in labor and her contractions were speeding up. Hess said the physician on call had just left, so she chose to leap into action. Dr. Hess, who is also a member of the Physician Moms Group (PMG) said when she heard the woman screaming in the other room, she knew that the baby needed immediate attention.

"I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room", Hess told WKYT. She literally worked until the last second!

"I said you know, I'm not on call, I'm here in a gown, but I think we ought to have the baby", she said.

"I was not being quiet about the fact that it was hard for me not to push", Halliday-Johnson told PEOPLE in an interview. Being a doctor, she could not help but run to help the woman, who was undergoing complications in her delivery. Hess said when Johnson saw her, she was just relieved to get the birthing process moving. "It makes you feel better, bringing a baby girl into the world, knowing there are women like her willing to step up like that". Nurses had asked Johnson not to push because the on-call doctor was out on a break and had not returned yet. She was in her own room on July 23 when she heard a woman wail, and selflessly, went to help her. Later that night, she too gave birth to a baby girl.

Now, she calls the experience "really interesting", adding that she and her patient have a "special" bond.
