Beckham poised to have MLS team in Miami after successful vote

"We're one foot closer, but we're not over it yet".

David Beckham overcame grumbling from Major League Soccer owners on Wednesday to win permission for formal talks on launching a Miami franchise that will have a billionaire financier as the majority owner.

Beckham has been targeting Miami for an expansion franchise since 2013. Garber said their plan was well-received in the meeting. Lauderdale-based Miami Fusion after the 2001 season - and the go-ahead from MLS owners comes more than three years after Garber introduced Beckham in Miami as the owner of the 24th MLS team.

"We will conduct lots of meetings and have an enormous amount of work over the next few months to get to the next two (teams)", he said. "But I am confident that we'll be able to do that sometime, perhaps by the end of the summer".

Garber said Beckham's enthusiasm in the presentation is what gave the board confidence to vote on moving forward with the expansion process.

Miami-Dade County commissioners granted permission to ex-LA Galaxy captain Beckham and his ownership group - Miami Beckham United - to secure three acres of county-owned land for a new 25,000-seat soccer stadium in June. "Now he wants to take that same energy and that same belief in our country and same belief in our league and the same promise of soccer in North America and execute on that as an owner".

According to King, Adidas will also play a key role in helping MLS develop players through Generation Adidas, provide better marketing for homegrown stars and increase support for Generation Adidas Canada so that our Canadian brethren can return to the World Cup as soon as possible.

Expansion Update. Garber singled out four cities among the 12 expansion candidates for the four spots that will be awarded - two that will be decided at the end of the year and two that will be picked at a later date.

"Sacramento putting a shovel in the ground this week was a great move on their part", he said.

Adidas and Major League Soccer announced the extension of their long-term partnership through 2024. And a lot more is at stake here than just dollars and cents.

Marking adidas' largest-ever investment in North American soccer, the six-year contract makes adidas the official supplier for the league, its clubs, MLS youth academies and youth affiliated clubs.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference prior to the MLS All-Star Game, Garber said: "We believe the time is right - finally - for Miami to become a great MLS city".
