Dodgers 53-game winning streak in games they led snapped

The Dodgers led 1-0 and 3-2 on Wednesday.

Dodgers: LHP Alex Wood (12-1, 2.38) suffered his only loss of the season when he allowed a career-high nine runs, seven earned, to his former Atlanta teammates in a 12-3 loss on July 21.

Bellinger sent a 91 miles per hour fastball from Julio Teheran over the wall in right-center, almost the same spot he hit his 29 home run of the season a day earlier, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Atlanta has left 69 runners on base in the past nine games, going 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position in Monday's 7-6 loss to Philadelphia. On the other side, the Braves have lost six straight and are 0-4 in their last four home games.

Dodgers: RHP Brock Stewart (0-0, 0.00 ERA) allowed two hits and no runs in two innings of relief during his only appearance against the Braves on July 20. Los Angeles was held to six hits and a BB with Cody Bellinger cracking a solo homer while Chase Utley and Joc Pederson driving in runs. Sims was making his major league debut.

Rex Brothers (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for Atlanta, which snapped a six-game losing streak.

"He's an elite player", Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said of Darvish.

The win extends the Dodgers' latest win streak to nine games - five of them have been one-run decisions including the last three.

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Kenta Maeda (18) pops up a bunt in the third inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves, Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, in Atlanta.

The loss prevented the Dodgers, who have the best record in the majors, from recording three win streaks of at least 10 games in a season for the first time in franchise history.

Darvish, acquired by the Dodgers from the Texas Rangers on Monday, will join the team Wednesday. But Maeda pitched like someone who wants to stick around for awhile. The right-hander struck out two while walking one in the ballgame. It was only the fourth time in 17 starts this season Maeda has pitched into the seventh inning and the first since June 27.

The Braves are 3-12 since getting to 45-45, and any thought of trying to make a wild-card run are now long gone. He has not permitted an earned run in 16 2/3 innings this season.

Doubles by Yasiel Puig and Chris Taylor produced the first run. Puig also singled, stole third base and scored on catcher Tyler Flowers' throwing error in the fifth.

That was enough for Maeda to hand a 3-0 lead over to the bullpen in the eighth inning.

The Braves answered Bellinger's bomb in the bottom half of the second with a two-run home run by Danny Santana.

Lefty reliever Tony Watson became the first of the Dodgers' three trade-deadline acquisitions to make his debut when he replaced Ravin. Freeman shifted to third base last month to keep Adams' bat in the lineup.

Kenley Jansen closed out in the ninth.
