Among those said to be affected is Isaac Makwala of Botswana, a medal prospect in the 400m, who was given medical dispensation to miss his heat in the 200m after falling ill.

Public Health England said 30 athletes and support staff had been affected at a central London hotel, with two cases confirmed as being the norovirus bug.

London 2017 organisers released a statement late on Monday saying that a number of teams had reported cases of gastroenteritis at their official hotel.

"According to IAAF medics I am apparently suffering from food poisoning which has affected several other athletes in the athletes' hotel", he wrote on his Facebook page.

He had still been hoping to be cleared to race in Tuesday's 400m final, before the IAAF's medical delegate withdrew him from that as well.

Public Health England London deputy director for health protection Dr Deborah Turbitt on Tuesday said, "PHE has been notified of a confirmed outbreak of norovirus among people associated with the World Athletics Championships".

"We have followed strict hygiene protocol, ensuring that those affected are not in contact with other guests and all public areas have been thoroughly sanitised", a Tower Hotel statement read.

The Tower Hotel in central London has been hosting the Canadian and German teams as well as Botswanan runner Isaac Makwala, who goes for 200m gold at the London Stadium tonight.

"My whole year has been focused on the world championships".

"It is highly infectious and with vast numbers of people - athletes, site personnel and visitors - in such close proximity, exposure to affected individuals can not be contained easily".

"I was one of the athletes in quarantine", Canadian sprinter Aaron Brown said.

"After months of consideration, I have chose to retire from worldwide athletics", she wrote on Twitter.

Elaine Thompson, who was surprisingly beaten in the 100m final on Sunday night, was also reportedly sick before the race, says the paper. He says he will be running in the 400 meter heats.
