In other results, third-seed Dominic Thiem of Austria was upset 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-5 by Argentina's Diego Schwartzman and Fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, a finalist previous year, was ousted 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), 7-5 by Gael Monfils.

It will be an all-lefty battle between him and Nadal, and with the crowd behind Shapovalov, who knows what's going to happen. "On match point, when I hit that double right before it, I mean, my ears nearly popped".

The win means Nadal will take on Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the next round. "So take it how it is and hope that this match gives me some better rhythm and confidence against Bautista Agut, who plays actually very similar to David". I played him on hard courts also.

Rodger Federer quickly defeated Peter Polansky 6-2, 6-1, and that was a ideal birthday present for the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

The 18-year-old Shapovalov, who needed a wild card to get into the tournament, continued his giant killing form at the hardcourt tournament by rallying to beat Nadal in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) on Thursday.

Federer is aiming for his third career title at the tournament, which he last won in 2006. "David can play a lot better, too", Federer said.

It was his second meeting with Federer. He went ahead 40-0, but lost the next five points.

Rafael Nadal [VIDEO] has made it through the opening match of what could be his most important week in years. "His transition from the baseline to the net, it's a joke".

In other games, the sixth seeded Milos Raonic was sent out early as the Canadian lost 6-4, 6-4 to Adrian Mannarino. "I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year".

The unseeded Monfils played his third straight three-set match, including an upset win over fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori in the second round. It was the Frenchman's first win in four meetings with Nishikori.

Alexander Zverev also advanced to the next stage with a win over Richard Gasquet. Seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitov topped Mischa Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
