South Korean President Criticized for 'Lax Attitude' on Nuclear Threat

Regarding North Korea's threat on Tuesday to bomb Guam, the official said, "It is unique for five major North Korean ministries to issue threats, but that seems aimed at heightening fears in South Korea and weakening the U.S.' position".

Guam's Homeland Security Adviser George Charfauros says officials there are confident "the U.S. Department of Defense is monitoring this situation very closely and is maintaining a condition of readiness".

North Korea's increasingly threatening military buildup, Shin says, has made Moon more reliant on the United States for it security and less able to seek an independent path.

The South Korean official said member states of ARF reaffirmed it shared the common goal of the worldwide communities to "achieve a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea in a peaceful manner".

The meeting came hours after Pyongyang repeated its threat to attack the US territory of Guam with Hwasong-12 ballistic missiles, a plan that, the DPRK military said, was in the "final stages" of development. "The Blue House National Security Office is in close communication with the offices of national security aides in the U.S. and Japan".

The North Korean army command lambasted US President Donald Trump's loud statement that Pyongyang's threats "will be met with fire and the fury like the world has never seen".

As soon as the plan is developed, it will be referred to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un who will kick off its implementation, if need be, KCNA noted. "I condemn the nuclear tests and missile provocations that North Korea has been carrying out as if it's unbridled". "It's also in close communication with China and Russian Federation", the official said. Washington has repeatedly said that it doesn't rule out any scenario of dealing with the North Korean nuclear problem, including a military one.
