The Overwatch League adds new teams in London and Los Angeles

The Overwatch League ™ today announced its latest team sales, with esports organization founder Jack Etienne of Cloud9 purchasing the team for London, and sports industry leaders Stan and Josh Kroenke purchasing a team for Los Angeles.

KitGuru Says: There are now nine franchises in total signed up for the Overwatch League.

Just why bigwigs like Kraft and the Kroenkes are spending so much on Overwatch teams-something like 10 times as much as it would cost to buy into the more-established League of Legends League Championship Series-isn't quite clear.

"We are thrilled that Cloud9's formidable fan base throughout Europe and the United Kingdom now has a local team to call their own".

Cloud9 has set up shop in Blighty, with Cloud9's founder Jack Etienne picking up the London slot, while Stan and Josh Kroenke, who own traditional sports teams Arsenal Football Club, the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Mammoth, Avalanche and Rapids teams.

Despite this drama, there's an upside here: If Cloud9 chooses to draft London-based players, there are several former Fnatic pros looking for work, while if the Kroenkes want some names of decent L.A. -based Overwatch players, Cloud9 might be able to hook them up.

The two new additions join the original seven confirmed teams for the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, while Team EnVyUs are reportedly finalising a deal for the Austin-Dallas location, which has yet to be officially confirmed.

Overwatch is a multiplayer online first-person shooter video game that is played on Windows computers, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The other Los Angeles-based team is owned by Noah Whinston, CEO of Immortals, another e-sports organization. The League is expected to kick up later this year, with player signings occurring between August 1st and October 31st.

Blizzard is well on its way to launching the Overwatch League later this year, as two more franchises have signed on for spots on the league.
