Trump 'surprised' by Manafort raid in Russian Federation probe

Manafort's lead lawyer at Wilmer had been Reginald Brown, who chairs the firm's financial institutions group and also leads its congressional investigations practice.

Search warrants of the sort that Mueller obtained are approved only when there is probable cause that a crime has been committed.

"Mr. Manafort is in the process of retaining his former counsel, Miller & Chevalier, to represent him in the office of special counsel investigation", Manafort's spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in a statement. These sorts of raids happen when law enforcement officials want to prevent you from scrambling to destroy evidence, so they show up in the middle of the night and unannounced.

Manafort, who has a residence in Trump Tower in New York City, joined Trump's campaign last March, in the heat of the primaries.

None of this debate over his tenure has deterred Mueller, who is now using at least two grand juries - in Virginia and Washington, D.C. - to advance the Russian Federation investigation. A grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia in recent months has also been used by investigators looking into former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

That's according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the arrangement had not yet been publicly announced. That work sought the extradition of an exiled Turkish cleric living in the U.S. Through his attorney, Flynn has declined to comment on the investigation. Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein, also have reviewed the contents of memos written by fired FBI Director James Comey and his interactions with President Donald Trump as the committee reviews whether there was any improper interference with the FBI investigation to Trump associates. Kian has not responded to multiple attempts to contact him over several months.

Trump just can't help himself.

Trump has said previously that Mueller's job is not necessary because he hasn't done anything wrong, and he has accused him of having unspecified conflicts of interest. Manafort has turned over documents to the intelligence and judiciary committees in the Senate.

The content of the documents was not immediately clear.

The president got asked about Manafort after a meeting with Vice President Mike Pence at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
