Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3 in thrilling Premier League opener

Former Manchester United man Danny Welbeck also found the back of the net at the end of the first half, while substitute Aaron Ramsey scored the third goal just minutes before Giroud's victor.

A predictable Arsenal implosion followed, with Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy putting Leicester in front. After Aaron Ramsey leveled in the 83rd minute, Giroud sealed the three points within two minutes on an evening of thrilling attacks gifted by fragile defending.

Giroud then sent the previously despondent Arsenal fans wild when he headed the 85th minute victor from a corner, Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel only managing to turn the ball onto the underside of the bar before it bounced over the line.

'Tonight we needed this win, everyone knows the importance of the first game for confidence.

After crowning a good pre-season with a win over London rival Chelsea in last week's Community Shield, the Gunners should have been confident going into Friday's contest at the Emirates, reports Efe.

The Frenchman admitted he was relieved Arsenal managed to avoid an embarrassing opening day defeat.

'If you look across the world of football this is a plum position, people want to be manager of Arsenal.

"The first goal was from a short corner and we were not focused enough". "I love the man and the player", said Wenger.

"It's impossible to keep them happy when strikers don't play".

"He's a fantastic guy and he's committed".

More terrible defending followed in the second half, and Vardy restored the lead after he was left wide open on a corner, with Petr Cech in no-man's land.

Cech admitted it was a sloppy display from the Gunners' rearguard, but he took heart with the way they recovered to snatch the points. In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of recent weeks for me. "(We had) 70 percent possession, 27 shots on goal, Leicester had three shots on target and scored three so that shows you how efficient they are". "There were hard moments when we were down and we managed to get out of that and it's great to see".
