Buffalo Bills reshape team in two surprising trades with Rams and Eagles

With these two deals, the Buffalo Bills have now traded two of their top players at their respective positions, which might signal a rebuild is in progress.

The Bills also dealt a sixth round pick in next year's draft to Los Angeles in return for a second round pick. Bills starter Tyrod Taylor's future is uncertain beyond this year. I wish Sammy the best. "Just surprised it happened so fast".

The Buffalo Bills sent shockwaves through the National Football League world Friday afternoon, announcing a trade to send former Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-round draft pick.

Nearly simultaneously, the Bills acquired wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a 2018 second round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles for cornerback Ronald Darby and a 2018 sixth-round pick.

Running back LeSean McCoy, like Taylor, was surprised by the trades, but unlike Taylor, he knows what it feels like to get the shocking news that you never saw coming.

"I'm not making a decision that I've got to do it by this or that [date]", Beane says of addressing Watkins' contract situation.

"I've been there", he said Friday after practice. "We look forward to having him in a Rams uniform", Rams general manager Les Snead said. "We've got to continue to move forward".

McDermott admitted to being taken aback slightly, but as everything was presented, he clearly saw the vision. He said he didn't sleep much last night. "It was a hard decision, one that we spent a lot of time discussing, but these are the conversations that have to be had". Can he learn the offense well enough in the next couple of weeks to make an instant impact?

With the picks acquired on Friday, along with the first-rounder they acquired from the Chiefs when K.C. came up to get QB Patrick Mahomes in April's draft, Buffalo now has two picks apiece in each of the first three rounds of the 2018 draft, draft capital that is essential for a rebuilding team.

The Sammy Watkins trade wasn't all the Buffalo Bills had in store for their roster, though.

Going to the Bills should move him up draft boards. They'll either use the franchise tag next season to work on a contract or extend Watkins during this upcoming season. He has 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons, but topped 1,000 yards just once, in 2015.

Matthews posted 804 yards and three touchdowns with the Eagles in 2016.

Darby, 23, was a second-round pick of Buffalo in 2015 out of Florida State and represents an immediate upgrade for an Eagles CB depth chart.
