Coutinho officially asks to leave Liverpool

Jamie Carragher still insists there's no way Liverpool will let Philippe Coutinho leave this summer, even though he has handed in a transfer request.

Equally there is anger on the club's part that Coutinho submitted a transfer request having been told in face-to-face meetings with the owners and Klopp that such a move would not be entertained.

Many Liverpool fans are anxious their club have done relatively little in the transfer market, signing only three players, and so far failing to land their two most significant targets - RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

"Liverpool is not a club that has to sell players", Klopp said.

On Friday morning, Fenway Sports Group released a statement saying "no offers will be considered" for FC Barcelona target Coutinho this summer.

That news emerged only hours after Liverpool's owners had issued a statement stressing their stance that the 25-year-old would not be sold during the current transfer window.

Liverpool have not had an ideal transfer summer either, coming to loggerheads with RB Leipzig over a move for Naby Keita and running amok of Southampton in an attempt to lure Virgil van Dijk away from St Mary's.

"If FSG is saying something like this, then that's the statement", Klopp noted in his pre-match media briefing. "I have nothing to say about this".

Philippe Coutinho could miss Liverpool's crunch Champions League play-off clash against Hoffenheim next week, Jurgen Klopp has hinted. "He's important to us and is our captain and I want to keep him with the team". A lot of different things. I've said about it a few times, but maybe it's not been 100% clear.

"It makes us more hard to defend because speed is the most hard thing to defend in football", Klopp said. But you can not come up close to the start of the season with things like this. It's about doing it in the right moment. I said there'd be a riot if he went and I still stand by that.

Mohamed Salah from Roma will look to impress early and Watford have brought in some steady performing players from EPL plus Kiko Femenia from Spain.
