O&R Urges All Excavators to Call 811 Before You Dig

"Not only is it a free call and service, it is also the law".

"Conversely, if you dial 8-1-1 before digging, there is a 99% chance your excavation project will be completed successfully without damage to underground utilities", Kiger continued.

The 811 call is absolutely free.

Striking an underground electric or natural gas pipe can cause serious injury, damages and service interruptions.

Today is August 11 – or 811 Day – and Verizon once again is highlighting the importance of calling 811 prior to any digging project to have underground utility lines marked.

-Allow the required time for marking: Before digging, customers are urged to call 8-1-1, and wait the required time to have underground utility lines marked. "Still, even with that record number of calls, 44 percent of the damage to our electric facilities in 2016 occurred because someone did not call 811 before digging".

The Utility Coordinating Committee Damage Prevention Council will be hosting "811 Night with the Redwings" from 6 to 11 tonight at Frontier Field, 1 Morrie Silver Way, Rochester. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811.

"If you think about it, there are a lot of buried utilities on the ground". A quick phone call to 811 at least two days before digging connects callers to an operator at a local One Call Center who will provide information on when participating utilities must clearly mark their underground equipment.

National 811 Day is observed on this date each year to stress the importance of calling that number before putting tools to ground, be it a professional excavator or homeowners. The MISS DIG System's primary function is to process requests from individuals planning to dig and notifying member utilities about these excavations. The utilities' professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, spray paint or both.

If you hired a contractor, confirm that a call to 811 has been made. Once lines have been accurately marked, this is when digging can start.

Property owners and excavators must maintain and respect the marks.
