OnePlus 3 and 3T to get Android O as final software update

OnePlus 3 and 3T to get Android O as final software update

Here's what OnePlus said in the forums. OnePlus has officially confirmed that Android O or Android 8 would be the last major OS update for last year's variant of OnePlus i.e. OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.

After the launch of the new OnePlus 5 in June, owners of last year's OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were left with some confusion whether their older devices would continue to get software updates from the company.

The company's head of product Oliver Z says security patch updates are coming "for the foreseeable future" but there'll be no Android P release for the 2016 handsets. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we'll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5.

While this isn't really a surprise, it will come as a blow to OnePlus owners who aren't upgrading to the new and more expensive OnePlus 5.

The OnePlus 3 and 3T are two praise-worthy smartphones by OnePlus. OnePlus has been pushing updates to users on the Open Beta Program around every 1-2 months since its release, and seeing as how the beta has been used to test new features before releasing them to public builds, it only makes sense that these will be ended as well.

As for the foreseeable future, OxygenOS on the OnePlus 3/3T will be updated to version 4.5 in the next month or two, though a security patch will arrive "soon".

The OnePlus 2, from the class of 2015, were initially supposed to receive Android Nougat, but were recently designated to be forever stuck on Android Marshmallow instead. At this point, the OnePlus 3 is 14 months old while the OnePlus 3T is just 9 months old from their respective dates of release.
