Pochettino promises to break Spurs' transfer duck

He described the £750m redevelopment of White Hart Lane as "a challenge" but said: "I can honestly say it is not impacting our transfer activity because we are yet to find a player who we want to buy but cannot afford".

Tottenham have confirmed that right-back Kieran Trippier will not be named in the squad to face Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Sunday.

But Pochettino was at pains to stress that the matter was not resolved, with Rose's inflammatory comments not indicative of a wider problem within the dressing room.

"I don't want to compare us with other clubs, who have made signings before us in the previous two seasons and we have finished above them".

Rose, in his apology via his agency Base Soccer, did not comment on his future as he went on to wish good luck to Tottenham for their first league match of the season against Newcastle United.

Victor Wanyama missed the north London club's Juventus friendly following a minor knee problem, but it looks possible for him to make his come-back during the Premier League opener. The moment he apologises everyone moves on.

'When you are trying to promote yourself to other clubs potentially, I can not believe other clubs will be impressed with that. It is not a big issue and it is time to move on.

"If you see the last five years, always Tottenham sign players at the end of the transfer window", he said.

"I don't understand why now it's a big issue when before it wasn't".

However, unlike many of their competitors, Spurs do not have the financial clout to spend hundreds of millions on players to build on their first-team squad ahead of next season.

Pochettino's side have struggled at the national stadium in recent times, including in their bad Champions League campaign past year where they did not make it out of the group stage. We are working hard to deliver that and ensure that by the end we add a few players, maybe three or four.

Harry Kane is likely to lead the line and the England striker needs just one goal to reach 100 for Spurs, although he has never scored a Premier League goal in August. We needed to bring some players in some positions to have competition.
