Walmart apologizes for 'Own the school year' sign over gun display

This morning, Walmart issued a statement and apologized for the display saying it was a "truly bad".

A photo showing a glass case full of guns with a sign directly above it reading "Own the school year like a hero" went viral on Reddit before making its way to other social media platforms. "We are working to identify the store involved".

"What's seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores", the company said in a statement.

'We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened, ' the spokesperson added.

It's back-to-school shopping time for a majority of the country, which means people around the USA are streaming into places like Target and Meijer to scoop up their pens, pencils, notebooks, and Trapper Keepers.

This is not the first time Walmart has run into trouble with marketing mishaps. The Evansville store has been ruled out as Walmart continues to search for where the photo was taken. Walmart corporate said it didn't mean any disrespect and the display was quickly taken down.

Following May's tweet, Walmart's account was bombarded with angry messages, replying to dozens of outrages Twitter users. 'This was frightful and we removed the sign as soon as we found out'.

On Friday, Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson confirmed to CNNMoney that the company has determined that the incident was the result of mischief.

'People don't seem to honestly care, ' May noted.

Last September, a Walmart in Panama City Beach put up stacked boxes of Coca-Cola to resemble the World Trade Center in an apparent attempt to commemorate 9/11.
