A powerful blast has killed at least 15 people and wounded 32 others in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, an official said.

At least 15 were killed and 32 injured in a blast in Quetta's high-security neighbourhood on Saturday night. The city has been put on high alert following the blast.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa condemned the terrorist attack and said that such terror-inducing attacks can not shatter our hopes.

In August past year, at least 74 people were killed in a suicide attack on the city's Civil Hospital, while another 60 were killed in an attack on a police academy two months later.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the army, said that an on-duty security vehicle was targeted in the blast and added 10 security officials were also injured in the attack. "Our resolve won't succumb to any challenge", Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor tweeted. However, sources cited by local news channels, claimed that the attack was a terror operation executed by the insurgent outfits targeting the vehicle of security personnel.

Mineral-rich Balochistan, where Gwader is located, has been plagued for decades by a separatist insurgency and sectarian killings.

Security forces reached the scene and cordoned off the area.

The province was rocked by a series of attacks late a year ago that claimed over 180 lives and raised concerns about a growing militant presence, including fighters affiliated with Islamic State, which has claimed several bombings in Baluchistan.

The ISPR said the vehicle deployed on security duty was targeted in the attack.

Islamic State militants and the Taliban have attacked Quetta city in the past.
