Broncos Derek Wolfe says he "dodged a bullet" on ankle injury

Broncos Derek Wolfe says he

ENGLEWOOD-It was the type of injury scare that could have spoiled a season before it began.

Wolfe was helped onto a cart, driven off the practice field, and helped into the trainer's room while putting no weight on his right leg.

Wolfe was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and he's been an a starter for them ever since. That's great news for Denver's defense. "Hopefully, it's not serious and it's just a sprain". Outside linebackers Shane Ray (wrist) and Shaquil Barrett (hip) aren't expected back until the start of the regular season or later.

The Broncos lost another defender to injury late in the first quarter of Thursday night's win against the Bears. He will get another shot to stick on a practice squad here with the Broncos, where he has three preseason games and all of the remaining practices to try and make an impact. Safety T.J. Ward has missed the last week with a hamstring injury.

Wolfe appeared to suffer the injury during an 11-on-11 play early in practice.

Wolfe has posted 5.5 sacks in each of the previous two seasons, respectively.

Broncos coach Vance Joseph said following the team's practice, the preliminary exam by the medical staff showed "the first look, it wasn't serious".

With depth NT Kyle Peko still recovering from a broken foot, the interior of the line was already a man short.
