Cambodia's FM defends position on South China Sea

U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that North Korea would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States, provoking a riposte that the North was examining a plan to fire missiles at the U.S. -held Pacific island of Guam.

China's foreign minister said over the weekend that talks for a long-sought code of conduct in the South China Sea, first mooted in 2002, may finally start this year if "outside parties" don't cause a major disruption.

Talking to the press following the event, the Deputy FM said that Vietnam has worked closely with the Philippines as the ASEAN Chair, as well as the other countries, to put forward initiatives for of the execution of action plans, draft documents, to strengthen ASEAN agencies and promote consensus, thus ensuring the success of the meetings and the bloc's prestige. "They have accomplished more than that", she said.

They also called on China and the Philippines to respect last year's ruling by an worldwide arbitration tribunal, which dismissed most of Beijing's claims to the sea.

"The South China Sea doesn't only include the Spratly Islands, and for Vietnam, developments on the disputed Paracels are just as destabilizing", AMTI said. Neither China's defence ministry nor its foreign ministry immediately responded to a request for comment.

The booming ties of China and ASEAN has made China the biggest trading partner of ASEAN since 2009.

In response, Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano also told ASEAN journalists that China is playing a very positive role in the region because China's growing economy has fuelled the tourism industry in Southeast Asia.

China's claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes each year are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. The meeting was hosted by Manila and attended by 1,700 delegates.

China claims nearly the entire sea, which includes one of the world's most busy trade routes and sits stop valuable oil and gas reserves.

"Relations between China and Singapore have experienced ups and downs".

In a joint statement after their foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the same gathering on Sunday, the US, Japan and Australia delivered a noticeably sterner rebuke to Beijing.

Tensions between the two countries burst into the open last November when Hong Kong port authorities impounded nine Singaporean armoured military vehicles being shipped home from training grounds in Taiwan.

Prior to the signing of the framework and the holding of the ASEAN 50th founding anniversary, the Chinese government reminded ASEAN journalists that outsiders should not meddle in the South China Sea territorial dispute.
