Feared Dead As Landslide Sweeps Away 2 Buses In Himachal Pradesh

The landslide that occurred early Sunday in Urla village in Himachal Pradesh state buried part of a highway, trapping two buses and at least three cars, said district official Sandeep Kadam. Indian Army personnel and members of the NDRF have been called for fast execution of the rescue operations.

So far, 10 bodies have been recovered from the debris.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi prayed for the quick recovery of those injured. "Pained by the loss of lives due to landslide related accidents in HP's Mandi district".

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday offered condolence to the families of the deceased in the Mandi landslide and requested the Himachal Pradesh Government to provide every possible aid.

Local TV channels reported that the two buses were stationed at a roadside eatery located on the highway for refreshments when the disaster occurred.

"Around 50 people are feared to have been washed away in the landslide", Himachal Pradesh's Transport Minister G.S. Bali told the media. One bus was on its way from Chamba to Manali.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal rushed to the spot. Director General of Police Somesh Goyal said eight passengers were travelling in the Manali-Katra bus while 47 passengers were in the other bus. "A bus had also rolled down to almost 800 meters from the National Highway, and four people have been rescued from the debris", Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, Sandeep Kadam told ANI.
