Guam Issues Release to Residents: Preparing for an Imminent Missile Threat

Trump warned the North and its leader Kim Jong Un against attacking Guam or U.S. allies on Friday, a day after the isolated country said it was finalising by mid-August a plan to launch four intermediate range missiles towards waters off the U.S. Pacific territory.

The escalating threats between the US and North Korea have thrown the tiny USA territory of Guam into the headlines. "North Korea raising tension (on the Peninsula) is a serious challenge against the South Korean-US alliance and the global community".

"I'm not really too anxious about it".

"But, considering Guam supposedly has a massive quantity of weapons, all I can do is pray and trust all will be OK".

A notice put out by Guam's Joint Information Center Saturday warned residents how to prepare "for an imminent missile threat". While the latest rhetoric causes concern, that's as far as it goes, he said.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said it would be legal for Japan to intercept a missile aimed at Guam.

Today, Naval Base Guam is the home port for four nuclear-powered fast attack submarines and two submarine tenders.

Asian travelers, mainly Japanese and South Koreans, are still landing at the airport and it's tough to find a room at one of the vacation resorts dotted around the island. The tourist district, Tumon, is located between the two military bases. But it wasn't known until now that the contacts have continued, or that they have broached matters other than USA detainees.

"Before we start talking about all these military options, we have to decide what are we going to do with the USA citizens over there".

He added: 'But I am always quick to shutter up whenever we get typhoon advisories or tsunami warnings. US defense spending is the main economic driver of the island, making up about 40 percent of its gross domestic product, followed by tourism.

Alternatively, United States destroyers equipped with Aegis ballistic missile defenses could take down a missile at an even longer range, before it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. Also, the United States routinely uses Aegis-equipped warships around the island chain of the Marianas, of which Guam is the largest.

The North also said its Hwasong-12 missiles would fly over southern Japan en route toward Guam, which would be the first time a North Korean missile flew over the country.

Even while the missile test is not finalized, it would be hard for Mr. Kim to reverse course once he approves, analysts said.

Host Brian Kilmeade noted that Japan has promised to use its missile defense technology to help protect Guam. "If North Korea commits provocations despite our stern warning, it will face a strong response from South Korea's military and the US-South Korea alliance".

"There are layers that are floating in the Pacific in terms of missile defense", he told CNN.

South Korea's Kospi index fell as much as 1.2% as foreigners sold shares, before paring the drop to 0.4% at the close.

With liberals back in charge in South Korea, Seoul is making peace offerings to its archrivals, but the North isn't biting.

Guam's people, who've endured a history of take overs by Spain and Japan have heard Korea's threats before.

The way to avert a war with North Korea is to have a conversation, and that's not happening, Hecker said. If thousands die, they're going to die over there.

Calvo suggested that this was risky talk. "Be prepared, and pray to God, it doesn't happen", said Guam resident Daisy Mendiola.
