J&K: Encounter underway in Shopian; 2-3 terrorists holed up

An soldier was killed and four others injured on Saturday in an ongoing gunfight between the security forces and militants holed-up in a village in Kashmir's Shopian district, officials said. Two-three terrorists are suspected to trapped.

Reports said that the youth clashed with the security forces in Awneera to break the cordon around the village on Saturday.

A militant was killed on Sunday following a fresh gunfight at Zainpora area of south Kashmir's Shopian district. The Army officers retaliated, leading to a gunfight. The dead body of one terrorist has been recovered and counter-terror operations are underway.

The injured soldiers have been evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital of the Army for treatment.

Security forces are conducting searches as two to three terrorists are believed to be hiding in the village.

The sources said the cordon-and-search operation was launched following inputs about the presence of militants including Zakir Rashid Bhat alias Zakir Musa, the head of "Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind", the Al-Qaida's India cell.

Police also denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.
