Yuvraj dropped, Dhoni retains spot for ODI series against SL

Rahul's inclusion means there will be four regular openers in the squad and it is likely that the Karnataka batsman will be playing in the middle order.

While Yuvraj's place in the side has been questioned by many for the longest time now, he has the backing of skipper Kohli despite a lean run with the bat and below-par fielding. The selectors also announced that Rohit will be the vice-captain of this team.

The selectors made a decision to rest four frontline bowlers - Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are captain Virat Kohli's options among slow bowlers. Both Ashwin and Jadeja, who have been rested for this series, were left wanting as Fakhar Zaman attacked his way to his maiden ODI century in the summit clash.

India will play five ODIs and one T20 from August 20. Dinesh Karthik, who earned a recall to the side during the Champions Trophy, and scored 52 runs in two matches during the West Indies tour that followed, was dropped.

In the New Year, the team will fly to South Africa and then play Independence Cup in Sri Lanka, before the 2018 IPL gets underway.

The squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma (vice captain), Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.
