Modi calls for a new, 'clean' India by 2022

On the nation's 71st Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort to mark the occasion.

"A New India is one that leaves behind a "chalta hai" (it is okay) attitude".

Singh said Modi had raised the issue of triple talaq in his speech which prime ministers in the 80s were unwilling to discuss. Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and VP Singh were the PMs in the 1980s.

He warned that those who had looted the nation, and the poor, would not able to sleep peacefully since honesty was celebrated today. "And slowly by using technology and connecting (biometric identification) Aadhaar (with several items including bank accounts and income tax return filing) we have made successful efforts", he added.

Good governance is about speed and simplification of processes. "The call of the Quit India Movement was "Bharat Chhodo", but the call today is "Bharat Jodo".

And about Kashmir, where the state government says at least 43,000 people have died in unrest, he said: "The problem will not be solved by abuse nor will the problem be solved by bullets..."

"The leaders resolved to enhance peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new two-by- two ministerial dialogue that will elevate their strategic consultations", the White House said, without giving details of the mechanism. He said, "The time has come to change this. In this time of distress and sadness, sympathies of 125 crore people of the country are with them", he said.

Modi said the government had completed 21 irrigation schemes in the last three years and 50 more would be completed soon. Casteism and communalism will not help the nation.

Deprecating violence in the name of faith, Modi said: "India is about shanti (peace), ekta (unity) and sadbhavana (harmony)".

"We hope India and U.S. can develop relations which are conducive to regional peace and development".

"I Invoke Team India to run for a New India by 2022".

On cooperative federalism, Modi said this had changed the terms of engagement between the Centre and the states. We were told that the RBI is still may take decades to count. This is also evident from the firm resolve of the Kashmiri people who are braving all sorts of brutalities but are not willing to forego their right of self-determination and are fully resolved to pursue their struggle till it reaches its logical conclusion.
